False Memories

This is the namesake of the 'Mandela Effect.' Thousands of people distinctly remember Nelson Mandela dying in prison in the 1980s, complete with a televised funeral and a moving speech by his widow. In reality, Mandela was released in 1990, served as President of South Africa, and lived until 2013. The memory likely conflates him with Steve Biko, another activist who died in custody in 1977, or the intense coverage of his 70th birthday concert in 1988.
